What is private cloud
IaaS and PaaS solutions greatly improve the flexibility of your IT infrastructure. While initially only available as public cloud solutions, the underlying technology has found its way back into the data centre and is known as the private cloud.
Cloud provides the foundation for a cost-effective and successful IT transformation
Get the agility, scalability and efficiency of the public cloud, with the greater levels of control and security of a single-tenant, dedicated environment. It can be hosted on-site at your own data centre or at a service provider’s data centre.
It may sound like an oxymoron, but building a private cloud can offer a lot of the benefits of public cloud infrastructure. First and foremost, transforming your data centre into a private cloud makes your IT more agile and helps to reduce costs while preparing your infrastructure to seamlessly interoperate with the public cloud. All of which makes the transition to hybrid cloud far easier.
What is a private cloud?
A private cloud is dedicated to the needs and goals of a single organisation whereas public clouds deliver services to multiple organisations. With such a model an enterprise uses a proprietary architecture and runs cloud servers within its own data centre.
While almost all data centres today are built using commodity computing resources in combination with a Storage Area Network (SAN) environment running hypervisors such as Hyper-V or ESX, only a few offer the functionality that you get from Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Azure. Azure and AWS not only run virtual workloads, but also allow for the creation of containers that have their own network infrastructure. These can be connected to other containers through definitions created in the console. Workloads can be load balanced and secured using integrated load balancers and firewalls. Storage can be selected based on how fast data needs to be accessed and for what purpose.
The management system not only controls your workloads and where they are stored, but also controls the configuration of the underlying network.
Business benefits of a private cloud
- Agility
- Deliver features faster by providing your users with on-demand, self-service access to infrastructure.
- Security
- Get the enhanced security of dedicated, physically isolated network, compute and storage layers.
- Customisation
- Customise the dedicated compute, storage and networking components to best suit your needs.
- Performance
- Gain performance advantages over public cloud, with dedicated resources for your business.
